Hall and Oates

Best selling pop duo Daryl Hall and John Oates teamed up in 1969 and began writing folk-oriented songs and performing together. They eventually came to the attention of Tommy Mottola who became their manager. Three years later they signed to a major record label. Their combination of "rock and soul" made them one of the most popular groups of the late 70's and early 80's dominating commercial radio throughout most of the 80's. In 1975 they had their first hit, "Sara Smile" which reached #4 on the pop charts. Soon after, it was followed by great hits such as "Rich Girl," "Kiss on My List," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go for That" and "Maneater." Hall and Oates to date have continued to perform and record.

As teens growing up in Philadelphia, they both had their respective bands: Daryl Hall in The Temptones, and John Oates in The Masters. A year after both bands released their singles, Daryl Hall & John Oates crossed paths. They met in a freight elevator at the Aldephi Ballroom while escaping a riot during the club's legendary Battle of the Bands. Due to their similar musical tastes, and the fact they went to the same university at the time, they immediately became acquainted. Hall and Oates started working together in the early 1970's and have sold over 60 million albums

Daryl Hall and John Oates have had an extraordinarily successful career. They relocated from Philadelphia to New York in 1974. They have managed to mix pop, rock and R&B together. Their first album, Whole Oates was released in 1972 followed by Abandoned Luncheonette in 1973 and War Babies in 1974. Bigger Than the Both of Us was not released until the summer of 1976 leading the duo to their first number one single "Rich Girl" the following year. Their first hit was in 1975 and until this day, they've had six number one singles and earned a total of 19 gold and platinum awards and six platinum albums. The Recording Industry Association of America has called them the most successful duo in rock history, surpassing the Everly Brothers.

Although they did more solo work in the 90's, this pair of soulful folkies never stopped making great music. Do It for Love was released in 2002. The album's little song remained at number 1 on the Billboard and R&R's Adult Contemporary charts for four consecutive weeks. One of their secrets to remaining the best duo in rock history according to Daryl Hall and John Oates is to give each other enough space to work on individual projects. They have both said that "Although they are both working on individual projects on their own, they have no plans of ever stop working together as a duo."
